Olympic Rowing

Rowing has been part of the modern Olympic programme for more than a century, and few sports ask more of its athletes. The racing is short, brutal and decided by fine margins, after years of training that most spectators never see.

This section covers the rowers themselves, from Britain’s great champions to legends from Canada, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. It also explains how the sport works: the rules, the boats, the distance, and how crews steer a straight line at full power.

We also look at what ordinary rowers can borrow from the elite. You won’t train like an Olympian, and you shouldn’t try to, but the principles behind their preparation apply to anyone with a rowing machine. Results and dates here were checked against World Rowing and British Rowing sources where we could read them, and we welcome corrections.
