Rowing in Russia: Organisation and Historic Centres
How rowing is organised in Russia, from Peter the Great's 1718 Neva club to the federation in Moscow, its historic centres, and a note on UK travel advice.

This page is for readers curious about how rowing works in Russia and where its history lies. It isn’t a club directory: we couldn’t confirm enough individual clubs from sources we could read, so we’ve kept to what those sources support.
How the sport is organised
The national body is the Federation of Rowing Sport of Russia (Федерация гребного спорта России, FGSR), based in Moscow. Its site groups competition into rowing, coastal rowing, indoor rowing and para rowing, among others. It has a section for regional federations, but no entries appeared when we read it, and it doesn’t list individual clubs.
Recent events on the federation’s site include the Russian Rowing Cup, the Pregolya Regatta and the Vladivostok International Regatta. An indoor Russian Cup is listed for 18 to 21 December 2026 in Lipetsk.
The historic centres
St Petersburg. The federation’s history places the sport’s origins here. Peter I decreed a “Nevsky Fleet” club in 1718, and the city held annual races for ferrymen on the Neva from 1742 to 1752. The St Petersburg River Yacht Club raised its flag on 21 March 1860, and the first rowing race followed on the Middle Nevka on 31 July that year. An All-Russian Union of Rowing Societies was formed in 1908.
Moscow. The federation names Moscow, with St Petersburg, as a main stronghold of the sport before the 1990s. The city hosted rowing at the 1980 Olympics on the Krylatskoye Rowing Canal. The federation’s history says clubs and schools in both cities closed in the 1990s.
Kazan. The Kazan Rowing Centre sits on Lake Sredny Kaban with a 2,000 m course. Its operator’s page lists the Russian Rowing Cup among the events it has hosted.
Travel advice
UK readers should check the current GOV.UK travel advice for Russia before making any plans. When we read it on 30 October 2026, the page was last updated on 18 September 2026 and said the FCDO advises against all travel to Russia. It also noted that travel insurance may be invalidated if you travel against that advice. Readers elsewhere should check their own government’s guidance.
For clubs you can visit, see all club guides, or read why a club is worth joining and rowing for beginners.
